Whether you're scheduling care for yourself or your adolescent, this page will walk you through what to expect before your first appointment and how to prepare.
New patients begin with a comprehensive 90-minute psychiatric evaluation.
Getting Started
Here’s what to expect as a new patient.
Step 1: Schedule Your Evaluation
Schedule your 90-minute initial psychiatric evaluation online.
Step 2: Complete Your Forms
Complete all required intake forms, consent forms, and questionnaires electronically before your appointment.
Step 3: Attend Your Evaluation
During your 90-minute evaluation, we’ll discuss your history, current concerns, symptoms, functioning, strengths, goals, and treatment options.
Step 4: Develop Your Treatment Plan
Together, we’ll determine appropriate next steps and develop an individualized treatment plan based on your needs.
Step 5: Schedule Follow-Up Care
When appropriate, 30-minutes follow-up appointments are scheduled based on your treatment needs.
Private-Pay Practice
Ascending Minds Psychiatry is a private-pay practice and does not accept medical insurance at this time. Superbills may be provided upon request for potential out-of-network reimbursement.
Before Your First Appointment
Please complete the following before your scheduled evaluation:
Complete all required intake forms and questionnaires.
Register for Spruce Health for secure communication with the practice.
Provide an up-to-date medication list, including prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and supplements.
Have information available about your medical and psychiatric history and current healthcare providers.
Ensure payment arrangements are completed before your appointment.

Ascending Minds Psychiatry provides telehealth psychiatric care throughout Virginia for patients ages 12–55.

Please note: AMP does not prescribe controlled substances, including stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, and other controlled medications.
Ascending Minds Psychiatry is not an emergency or crisis service. If you are experiencing a psychiatric emergency, call 911, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency department.
Scheduling for an Adolescent?
For patients ages 12–17, a parent or legal guardian must participate in the initial evaluation and provide appropriate consent for treatment.
Adolescents are also given developmentally appropriate opportunities to speak privately with their provider while parents and guardians remain important partners in care.
